About the Workshop

In conjunction with the 3 Contemporary Artists in the Classroom exhibition, Literacy Through Photography will present a day-long workshop for educators and artists interested in incorporating art-based collaborations into classroom learning.

Presented by Literacy Through Photography director and photographer Wendy Ewald, the workshop will feature participating artists Deborah Willis and Alfredo Jaar. The artists will discuss their own work and participate in panel discussions with the Durham teachers with whom they collaborated. In addition, some of the students who worked on the arts projects with the visiting artists will share their experiences.

Following the morning session, participants will be invited to visit the three exhibition sites during the midday break. The afternoon sessions will focus on the collaborative process. Teams of artists and teacher will lead the afternoon breakout sessions.
