Office of the Vice Provost for International Affairs

To support the University’s commitment to internationalization, the Office of Academic and International Affairs was established in 1995 to facilitate coordination among the University’s international programs and provide a locus for new initiatives. Today, the role of this office has expanded to include development activities for this specific purpose as well as for University initiatives as a whole. The main focus of the office remains the enhancement and encouragement of internationalization by promoting international development on campus and increasing Duke’s presence around the world.

Gilbert Merkx, Duke University Professor of the Practice of Sociology and Director of the Center for International Studies, has served as Vice Provost for International Affairs & Development since 2001. As Vice Provost, Professor Merkx is responsible for general oversight of Duke's numerous international and foreign language and area studies programs, development of Duke's programs and partnerships abroad, and furtherance of the internationalization of the University as a whole.
