1858 Treaty of Tianjin allows cigarettes to be imported into China duty free

1862 James Augustus Thomas is born

1865 James B. Duke is born

1880 Charlie Soong arrives in the US sponsored by tobacco magnate, Julian S. Carr. He was educated at Trinity College shortly thereafter.

1888 James Thomas makes his first visit to China

1895 Treaty of Shimonoseki allows foreign business to trade in China

1899 JA Thomas begins working for W. Duke & Sons

1900 China Relief Expedition is mounted to rescue foreign residents in China from the Boxer Rebellion

1900-1903 JA Thomas works for W. Duke & Sons in Singapore

1902 British-American Tobacco Co. founded

1903-1904 JA Thomas works for W. Duke & Sons in India

1904 RH Gregory goes to Shanghai

1905 JA Thomas goes to China for BAT

1905-1906 Anti-American goods boycott

1911 Dynasty collapses, replaced by Republican government

1915 Brightleaf tobacco seeds and growing methods are first transported to China

1916 BAT is manufacturing ½ to 2/3 of its tobacco sold in China IN China

1918 American-Chinese Tobacco Co. (meiguo-zhongguo yancao gongsi) formed for the "sole purpose of buying tobacco in the US and selling it to China"

1925 James B. Duke dies

1930s Tobacco trade suffers from Chinese war with Japan

1931 Japan invades Manchuria

1937 Full-blown war between China and Japan erupts

1940 JA Thomas dies
