2009 Summer Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) Fellowships
Application Deadline: Friday, February 27, 2009 by 5.00 p.m.
With funding provided by the U.S. Department of Education, the area studies center listed below will award non-service fellowships for the 2008 summer session. The awards provide stipends of $2,500 each plus remission of tuition and registration fees up to $4,000 for one summer session. We are pleased to invite Directors of Graduate Studies to nominate candidates for these FLAS Fellowships. Each center listed below will administer its own competition to award fellowships for the study of the languages listed, and application deadlines may vary.
The purpose of the summer FLAS Fellowships is to permit graduate or professional school students to study one of the languages indicated below on an intensive basis. The degree of intensity must be equivalent to covering one year of college-level instruction in the summer (for those at the beginner level, the minimum required number of contact hours is 140; for those at the intermediate or advanced level, the minimum required number of contact hours is 120). Please note that according to U.S. Department of Education guidelines, FLAS Fellows studying any language on an overseas program must be at the intermediate or advanced level of study of the language in question. The summer FLAS competitions are open to graduate and professional school students currently enrolled at Duke. In most cases, native speakers of these languages, even if U.S. citizens or permanent residents, are not eligible for a fellowship in their native language.
Eligibility requirements for Summer FLAS Fellowships:
- Recipients must be full-time students in a graduate or professional degree program during the regular academic years preceding and following this award;
- recipients must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents;
- recipients must enroll in the formal study of one of the languages indicated below;
- only candidates of very high professional promise should be nominated.
Application Materials:
- Summer FLAS application, including language self-assessment
- Personal statement, describing how this language study is significant to your current academics and professional plans (1 -2 pages)
- A single copy of your graduate transcript(s)
- Letter of recommendation – from a professor who knows your work
Please submit a single copy of your application materials (NO staples, please) by the deadline. It is recommended that you hand-carry the letter of reference in a sealed envelope with the referee’s signature on the back flap.
