With funding provided by the U.S. Department of Education, the area studies centers listed below will award non-service fellowships for the 2012 summer session. The awards provide stipends of $2,500 each plus remission of tuition and registration fees up to $5,000 for one summer session. Each center listed below will administer its own competition to award fellowships for the study of the languages listed.

The purpose of the Summer FLAS Fellowships is to permit students to study one of the languages indicated below on an intensive basis. As in previous years the fellowships are available to graduate and professional school students. As of summer 2010, the fellowships are also sometimes available to undergraduate students who are studying less commonly taught languages at the advanced level; each FLAS center makes its own decision regarding undergraduate application eligibility.

The degree of intensity must be equivalent to covering one year of college-level instruction in the summer.  Language programs at all levels of language learning should be a minimum of six weeks. For those at the beginner and intermediate levels, the minimum required number of formal contact hours is 140;  for those at the advanced level, the minimum required number of formal contact hours is 120.  Please note that according to U.S. Department of Education guidelines, FLAS Fellows studying any language on an overseas program must be at the intermediate or advanced level of study of the language in question and require individual approval by the Department of Education. Also, Duke undergraduate students proposing to enroll in a non-Duke overseas program will need to seek approval from the Duke Office of Global Education for Undergraduates.

The Summer FLAS competitions are open to undergraduate, graduate, and professional school students currently enrolled at Duke. In most cases, native speakers of these languages, even if U.S. citizens or permanent residents, are not eligible for a fellowship in their native language.

Eligibility requirements for Summer FLAS Fellowships:

  1. Recipients must be full-time students in an undergraduate, graduate, or professional degree program during the regular academic years preceding and following this award;
  2. Recipients must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents;
  3. Recipients must enroll in the formal study of one of the languages indicated below;
